Tag systems
So, I've had some requests or at least some mentions about members of my community wanting a tag system in place to reference back to questions that seem to be asked over and over again. I'm looking for suggestions on how to go about implementing and enforcing a tag system to make the community more useful and less redundant. It's the nashvillians community, a general interest community for people based in and around Nashville or people with a *ahem* general interest in Nashville. It just seems like we get a lot of questions about doctors and salons/stylists and tattoo artists and. . . well, surely we can do better to reference back to questions that have been asked a million times in a million ways.

I was wondering why my community layouts were looking a bit weird. It turned out to be because they had "vertical" ads.

OK, fixed that, but why are there any ads at all? The account type is "Basic account", which (for non-community accounts) means minimal features but no ads. If I try to change my account type, I'm offered the option of more features if I accept ads!

I'd like ad-free communities. Is this possible?

Just a warning to all rating community maintainers or members.. pretty much anyone on LJ actually.

wimlikesyou is stalking rating communities leaving filthy and sickening anonymous comments to the young girls in the communities and in their personal journals.

I suggest you ban him even if he is not already watching your community and to disable anonymous commenting. I have had too many complaints about him to even count and LJ won't do a thing because his IP isn't a valid indication of his identity.

Please sign my petition to have him banned and/or to stop all anonymous commenting http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/banwimlikesyou

Seems like this community is a bit dead and that shouldn't be the case because apparently there aren't many other communities out there like it.
I had a question....how do I change the settings so that when people post to my community it is set as "friends" only as the default, instead of having to click it. I am pretty sure there is a way to do it with the admin console or something but it didn't seem to work. Help?

Deleting comments
Hi all; I co-moderate nonwiccanwitch, and I have a question to run by you. It was just brought to my attention that anyone who has posting access in a community can delete anyone's comments in a thread, not just their own. This blows my mind. Shouldn't only the moderator(s) of a community have the ability to do this?? People should have the ability to delete their own comments and no one else's. Is this something that should be brought to the LJ staff's attention, or am I missing an easy fix to the situation? Or am I nuts?? Thanking you in advance!

promotion and choosing help
I run a fairly specialized gaming community dedicated to a specific game system. Do you think the standard (and very crowded) promotion communities are still the right place? The list I run is moderately active from word of mouth alone, but I want to keep it fresh and get some new people.
Also, I wouldn't mind appointing someone to help me with maintiaining but i'm not sure who to ask. I've got about 5 really active posters, and I don't want to offend any of them by 'picking' but I don't want to appoint all five of them either. Anyone else face this problem?

I need help
I am a new maintianer and I would like tips on how to promote my community. I also need to learn how to change the comment link name like the default is "post comment" and "x comments" but I have seen alot that are different. I also need to know how to blend the posts in with the background picture and make it to where the background picture doesn't scroll just the posts. Please help me if you can even do this stuff with a free account.

Abandoned Communities
I was trying to find people interested in doing Info Page community link exchanges.

I started a community called "link_xchange" for this very purpose, but it is deactivated now due to the fact that I'm just too busy to promote a new community. If you're interested in taking it over, let me know.

I also created another community called "lj_skeptics" which is also deactivated to not having enough time to help it grow. lj_skeptics was created for discussion of science vs. pseudoscience, the paranormal, scientific explanations of so called "supernatural" events, debunking psychics, palm readers, tarot, phrenology, and other things of that nature. If you'd like to take that community name over, let me know and I'd be happy to give it to you as well.

Community Link Exchange
Anyone interested in doing an Info Page community "Link Exchange" with me? In other words, you link to my community and I'll link to yours on the community info page. I think it's a good way to help communities get a bit more exposure without inundating people with community adverts. I have one geek community and one disability community. I would prefer to stay away from linking to communities which deal with erotica, slash, politics, religion, or rating communities though.

all hands on deck

because time is thrifty, i’ll need help running my community. it’ll be real easy. there aren’t a lot of members & there isn’t always a lot going on. if you have the time, please check the guidelines below.

i need a promoting mod.
what you do: join as many of the promoting communities around lj & simply stamp on a banner & make the post. voila. simple. if you’re feeling bored you can always go to individual journals & post a banner onto it (though some people get pretty offended).

how i can help: i can give you the password to our core user (it’s a separate journal made for promoting & putting mod junk on) so you won’t look like an ass promoting on your own user name. get it? it’s helpful. you really don’t have a lot of work. you don’t have to promote everyday. just every so often. i’ll be promoting also. no worries.

i need a graphics mod.
what you do: make graphics, silly. every so often i’ll ask you to make something (such as a new contest banner, a new member of the month banner, a new promoting banner, etc.) & you can get to it whenever you’d like. you have a lot of movement here. you can do & not do just about anything regarding graphics.

what you’ll need: i’ll need a little sample of your work. you should have a good program.

thank you.
cmnt here if you’re interested.

Free or Paid Community?
I was wondering if there are any real advantages to having a Paid Community account, other than the obvious one of helping to support LiveJournal? Can you do anything with Paid Communities that you can't do with Free Communities (other than layouts, which I don't care about?)

Also, if anyone is interested in doing a Community Info Page link exchange, please let me know.

New maintainer
I just felt last week the urge to create some communities related to differents subjects I liked or I thought that LJ needed. I stopped a little to work on the layout, user info and interests but still, I don't have any members. I would like to know when it is good to "give up" on a community?
Did you ever feel your community had reached its end? Or that nobody would be interested in it?
Please share your experience.
Thank you.

finding new maintainer for community?
I am the maintainer of a semi-large community that I no longer have interest in. I was wonder what you guys think the best approach would be to finding a new maintainer and/or moderators.

I want to be fair to the members, but I'm not sure if I should post an "open call" in the community, as that may just attract some power-hungry folks. I could also ask some frequent posters, but I don't want them to feel like they have to be nice and accept my offer.

What would you do?

New..mod of a..comm..never mind
so awhile ago i remember stumbling over 578956 damn rating communities & i thought, well wouldn't it be dandy to see something LIKE that with less..monster. (note: this is only an introduction)

so i made the_boulevard
recently i re-did the user info & the layout (myself, might i add) & i made boulevard_core to stuff all the safekeepings in. i've seen this done before? is it a good idea?

anyway that isn't my concern. my concern is: i decided to included introductions (instead of applications). they're not voted on or anything. it seems that members, however, don't get as involved as i do (which is a little discerning; it's become a hobby)

IT'S ALL INTROS. haha. i've seen it happen on rating communtities. all you do is vote yes or no & there isn't any other reason to be there. it's sad. i want "activity"

i hear from the same four people everyday. i like them. but then i'd like a crowd. any suggestions?

Interviewing Potential Maintainers
christyxjane and I run youngweddings. We were thinking of adding another maintainer this summer as we're both going to be very busy and could use a little help. I thought we could post an "application" and have interested people fill it out.

What are some questions you would ask potential maintainers?

-Having HTML skills (especially layouts)
-Experience using memories
-Stance on promoting and how it should be done

Anything else you can think of? Any example situations to ask them about to get an idea of how they would respond?

Is linking someones LJ entry in a Community a TOS violation
Howdy. I maintain
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<lj-user=the_bazaar>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

Howdy. I maintain <lj-user=the_bazaar>

I need to know if a user hot-linking someone elses LJ entry (thats unrelated to the argument) to further instigate and incite is a TOS violation.

Ive heard it is, but have read the TOS and cant seem to find the exact spot where its mentioned.

Help ASAP (and a direct link to where its mentioned in the TOS) would be great. Thanks!

Maintainer Humor
I just wanted to say that I think mlfoley and I may have introduced an entirely new rating concept to LiveJournal: Add Me ratings!

What happened is that in the ubergeeks community which kidzero, mlfoley and I maintain, someone posted an "Add Me" request to friend his/her journal. The ubergeeks community has a definite 'Geek' theme, but I had placed "Add Me" in the interest list as a way to get people's attention to add the community. Anyway, I'm not here to spam the community, but just to tell you how the humorous Add Me rating idea got started. As far as I know, its kinda dorky, but original!

How it all got started...Collapse )

So there you have it! It's quite possible that we have started the very first "Add Me" rating community. I thought some other maintainers might get a kick out of the idea, and when people post gratuitous journal or community spam, you could start rating their Add Me requests. :)

Ok, i started a community recently, hotel_workers  for people who, like me, work in hotels.  How do I get members????  Every other relevant community, seems to have a "no advertising other communities" rule!  I added interests that are relevant, but so far no one has joined!  I own one other community, from_english,</span> which had been somewhat successful, but i got members by advertising on another community, and it is a small, limited interest project...any advice???

Hey, all -

I'm *very* new to the maintenance stuff, I was recently bestowed with the responsibility of maintaining bad_sex. Basically, I'm hoping someone out there with experience will take a glance at the community, my posts & their responses in particular, to assess the situation and offer advice as they see fit. I was given this community by the LJ Abuse team, though I did not expect it. This has caused some anger among some community members, though most seem open to the idea (the owner seems to have abandoned bad_sex).

I guess you could say I'm looking for words of wisdom from people who have been there and done that. Right now, I'm trying to let the fire cool down - my main objective was to more efficiently get rid of the trolls that bombarded us.

Your time really is appreciated.

Hi all! I'm new to this community and just wanted to make an introduction. I'm also new to the whole "being a community maintainer" thing as well. I just made my first community a couple of days ago. It's called alt_expressions.

Basically, it's a community geared toward those who live or are interested in the dark, alternative life-styles to express themselves mainly through photography, but also with poetry, creative writing, and anything else they can think of to express themselves. Just check out the community info and the interests listed and you'll get the idea.

Anyways, I just wanted to say hi to you all! I really hope this community can be a valuable tool should I ever need assistance from all of you experienced maintainers here!

communities as "members of"
Hi, I recently become a community maintainer (ofannapolis). I have seen the user info pages of several communities that are listed as "member of" another community. However, when I try to join another community, I'm told that I cannot. I have found a similar question asked last year by clonie, but I'm wondering if anyone has found an easier way to do this recently. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Hi everyone,

I maintain two communities on LJ; questionofgod and fotography and have recently come up with a small problem. This seems to be the perfect place to ask about it so I hope someone out there is able to help.

The problem is mysteriously vanishing comments. Over the past few months I have received several emails from members of my communities regarding the comments they leave in responses to posts, asking me why I have deleted them. Each time I try to assure them that I have not but what actually happened to them, eludes me. Or it did, until just now when a member who'd posted an entry into one of the above communities admitted to deleting one or two of the comments to their post.

So in a nut shell, I guess my question is, how is that possible? As far as I was aware, it was only the community moderator and members posting the comments who could delete them. Is it a new feature on LJ where the people who post in communities can also delete the responses to their posts? Also, is there any way I can fix this so they are not able to? As it's bound to cause quite a stir. Like a setting I can disable?

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds :)

Do the rest of you as maintainers do anything to encourage posts? Is the membership of your community how you envisioned it?

When you start a community you never know what direction they it is going to go in - my comm walgreens, sometimes threatens to become a bitching post for employees rather than the honest fan site I meant it to be. I don't mind though, it's pretty funny and it's neat that the people doing that have each other. My first community, aging_hipster ,has hardly any posts either, but that's okay, it doesn't really have a focus to it, and we're not the most enthusiastic group about anything. On the other hand, the people in my new community (big_kids) are really friendly. They've already made the community their own. (They barely need me *sniff*) None of them are anything like me at all, but that's just fine. I hope it continues to grow.

mass x-posting
sandee_beach is posting all over several communities. Her post is advertising a supposed friend's community. If you go to that community the person who owns it has made mention of it. I guess sandee_beach is just trying to get people mad at this other person who owns the community that's being advertised. So check your communities so that you can delete these advertising posts.
